Freelance ES & PT > EN translator, editor and interpreter since 2012.
I localize online, marketing, commercial and PR content to help give clients direct access to the English-speaking market, specializing in the tourism industry.
My extensive translation experience includes tourism websites, legal documents, rental contracts, social media articles as well as literature, having translated my first book last year (2016).
I also provide English editing/proofreading services in collaboration with non-English native translators in other language pairs.
I also have experience acting as a volunteer interpreter in emergency medical situations among a community of expats in Ecuador.

I am both a Business Management and a Social Communication Bachelor, which I believe is a great advantage for understanding the corporative universe and advertisement industry. For that reason, I have knowledge of the specific vocabulary involving management, HR, finance, marketing, advertisement and so on. Besides that, I teach English to lawyers, accountants, admen and managers in Brazil as a private teacher, not only having to prepare specific classes, but also having to edit and proofread their emails and reports. Additionally, I have translated hospitality information and tour guides for a travel company. Given the growing exchange between countries, it is fundamental that services and products are accessible to an ever-wider number of people. I am interested in making all kinds of media more accessible to the general public, especially in places like Brazil, where few people speak English, although it is a widely spoken language.
I'm a nomadic translator and writer. I moved to Panama in 2010 and from there I went to work on advertising and translation agencies in Florida and Los Angeles where, along with my pre-law bachelors degree in International Relations and minors in Film, Business and Hispanic Marketing, I gathered enough knowledge to translate anything from contracts to technical documents and books. I also taught Legal English for two years. This year I'm translating a mystery novel from a Brazilian writer while maintaining clients from advertising agencies, legal practices and translation companies in Brazil, Colombia, Panama and the US.
I have over 7 years of experience working with a wide range of documents with special emphasis on legal translation. I have a Certificate in Translation from New York University (2014) and a Bachelor's Degree in English and Spanish from Oberlin College (2008).
I provide freelance editing and translation services. I have worked on projects in computer science, technology, math, physics, literature, history, politics, sociology, anthropology, social work, medicine and pharmacology, and the natural sciences. I have a Ph.D. in comparative literature, with a focus on Latin American literature, from the University of Michigan.
I enjoy working in areas where there is a need for an intermediary in order to achieve communication between people or groups that not only speak different languages, but also come from different cultures. I have experience working in different types of fields (such as entertaining, political, economic, technological, audiovisual, health and medical, among others).
Michael grew up speaking English, Portuguese and Spanish fluently due to his family circumstances. He considers himself a citizen of the world and is happy in many linguistic and cultural settings. He has a passion for languages, which kind of makes him a bit of nerd. He works from home in a small seaside city in northern Portugal, and has been in the language industry for over 10 years. In addition, he has a secret "past life" as a pharmacist in the UK National Health Service (with over 10 years' experience here also) and a passion for health-care related subjects, which makes him even more of a nerd.
Thankfully his wife and dog don't mind this.
My high school education as well as my first university experience was in France. There, I studied Foreign language, literature and civilization (English) and started doing my first translations. I also went to Sheffield Hallam University (UK) as part of the Erasmus program.
Once again in Brazil, I have also taught French, English and Portuguese as second languages. In the past two/three years I have worked a little with philosophy texts (mainly on Nietzsche) and more recently, I have been translating games.
I have now assembled a small team to help me with the languages I do not speak.
Brazilian Portuguese <> English, Dutch>English and Dutch>Portuguese translator. I have lived in all these 3 countries and I have native level English and Brazilian Portuguese. I am, besides Brazilian also Dutch, however, I only translate from Dutch into other languages because I no longer possess complete native fluency in this language to write texts into Dutch with adequate speed. However, if you need a translation into Dutch and you have some time to wait, depending on the subject, I can do it.
