I was born in Brazil in 1990, came to the US in 1998. Received an American education at school and a Brazilian education at home, thus I consider English and Portuguese (Brazilian), both to be my native languages. While in the US I have always lived in areas that are mostly populated by Hispanic and Portuguese immigrants, so I have always been exposed to Portuguese, but living in the US taught me to be able to switch between languages when necessary. My knowledge and control of the Portuguese language comes from being raised in a Brazilian home, by Brazilian parents who were both college graduates and stressed the importance of being bi-lingual, also having most of my Brazilian family living here in the US means I never lost touch with the culture and culture knowledge is crucial to be able to generate not just a "correct" translation, but a beyond that, a "culturally correct" translation. Of course, my knowledge and control of the English language comes from being part of the American school system since the 4th grade.
