When building a successful product, some great features inevitably fall by the wayside as your focus becomes more defined — it becomes a matter of choice. Thankfully, you guys are always vocal about the features you would like added to Smartcat.

Below is a list containing the 15 most requested features by our users, and we’d be very glad to hear which of them you would most like to see implemented. Naturally, we can’t develop them all at once but if you can find the time to let us know which of them you consider to be most vital, via the form found at the end of the list that would be great!

So, here they are (in no particular order):

1. Graphical reports over period
0 votes

This feature would give you a detailed overview of your translation business, and the general productivity of your team. We picture this (see what we did there?) as being delivered to you as a bunch of handy infographics you can pore over to understand where small tweaks can be made to boost the overall efficiency of your business. SAP, once again, beware!

2. Display non-printable characters

An option to display non-printable characters indicating spaces or paragraph markers is a popular suggestion. The QA check will inform you of any double spaces within a segment but with smaller screens those can sometimes be difficult to spot at first glance.

3. Calculate price according to hourly rates

Having a built-in time tracker to automatically calculate the cost of a project upon completion, according to the hourly rate listed on the freelancer’s profile would be a useful addition but requires quite a bit of development. Have you ever charged a translation by the hour, by the way? Let us know in the comments!

4. Translator availability

Each of you will have your go-to translators, depending on the topic. The reason they are your first choice is because they are top-quality professionals. As a result, it’s likely that they are busy working on other projects too. Having a status indicator of how busy they currently are could save you time when picking a translator for your urgent projects.

5. Export edits report

Flicking back and forth to understand which edits have been made can be a pain in the proverbial. Exporting a report that outlines the edits made and who made them would likely resolve a bug bear for many a project manager.

6. Project-wide text search

Providing what you are searching for has been previously added to the TM, this is no issue. However, what about being able to search through source texts, even if they haven’t been translated yet? This could be a real time saver.

7. Recycle bin a.k.a. Undo deletion
0 votes

As it stands, all deletions of a document or a project are permanent (eek, we know). The addition of a “recycle bin” like we are all used to on our computers would allow you to easily reverse accidental deletions and save on some stress-relief medications.

8. Hire non-translator roles

Fancy you could assign interpreters, copywriters, or designers to a task just in the same way that you do translators. In essence, this would turn Smartcat into a full-fledged resource management system, which we’re not sure we want to at the moment. But, well, who knows?

9. Auto-calculation of deadlines
0 votes

It can be difficult to estimate how long it will take a freelancer to complete a given task. This can lead to task invitations being turned down because you didn’t indicate enough time for the freelancer to get the task done. This feature would take an average of the overall time taken for similar tasks, and automatically calculate your deadline accordingly. Yummy!

10. Calculate project margin
0 votes
More about this feature ▾Collapse the description ▴

Smartcat would calculate your margin on the projects considering the amount your client pays you and the money you pay your freelancers. Smartcat would also warn you if the project had a negative revenue. SAP, beware, we’re coming! (Or not.)

11. Document preview
0 votes
More about this feature ▾Collapse the description ▴

One common gripe from our translators is that it is currently impossible to quickly preview translated documents until you export them. We know this is a feature many CAT tools have, and many of you guys asked for it, so do you think this is something we should work on? Scroll down to vote!.

12. Offline editor
0 votes

It might be hard for many to fathom in today’s world, but some translators don’t have access to a stable Internet connection at all times. For them, it would be cool to use the Smartcat editor without opening Smartcat’s website at all, doing away with the low responsiveness of web-based interfaces.

13. Job notifications
0 votes

Currently, when a customer invites you to a project, you will receive an email notification and an SMS. However, sometimes these can be missed. An improved job notifications feature would likely include chatbots and push notifications to do as much as possible to ensure that you don’t miss out on the jobs you seek.

14. Internal fuzzy matches
0 votes
More about this feature ▾Collapse the description ▴

Smartcat currently cannot discern the similarity between separate segments that have not yet been translated and added to a TM. The addition of an internal “fuzzy matches” feature would allow Smartcat to find similar segments and offer more correct price/discount estimates.

15. Group chat
0 votes

As it stands, you can only send any questions or general messages to a project manager or a translator individually. Being able to link in several managers and freelancers could be a convenient way to resolve issues more effectively.

So, which of these features do you think would help you improve your workflow the most? Did we miss some? Let us know in the comments!
