On June 9-10 the world’s largest globalization and translation industry conference LocWorld was held in Dublin. This year’s event was titled “Engaging Global Customers,” and participants focused mainly on how translation and localization can help international businesses appeal to users from all over the world. The Smartcat team was there as well, and we’re ready to tell you all about how our platform can help LSPs increase their productivity thanks to collaborative work on a whole new level. Below are the main points we shared during our presentation at LocWorld31 Dublin.

Deadlines and puzzles

The translation industry is fraught with tight deadlines and enormous files that needed to be client-ready by yesterday. Traditionally, translation project managers divvy up work between an entire squad of freelancers, and each works on their own section individually. Then managers put this jigsaw puzzle of translated text back together and wait until the editor passes through it with a fine-toothed comb to iron out all the inconsistencies and make the complete file read smoothly.

Collaborative work on a whole new level

Collaborative online work on projects is forever changing the translation industry by helping the translation process become 100% transparent. Teams can now work together on projects in a single online environment, so freelancers and managers alike can track the work of anyone involved.

Collaborative work decreases time spent on projects by at least half, making it easier to stick to deadlines. Freelancers share translated segments and glossary terms by constantly saving them in the project so everyone involved is always working with the same material. They can also comment on each other’s work in real time, which is exactly when the input of others is needed most! Managers likewise enjoy the benefit of up to 40% less time spent searching for freelancers, distributing files and putting them back together.

You’ve probably heard about all this before, now it’s time to try it out for yourself!

Shoulder to shoulder

The future of translation has editors and proofreaders working directly alongside translators. They no longer just see the individual segments, but the project as a whole. This speeds up the process and helps guarantee that they never miss a deadline.

Translation memories record every change an editor makes, including any matches the translator might encounter as they continue working on the document. When an editor spots a mix-up in the terminology, they can update the glossary instantly.

What’s under the hood?

This new level of online collaborative work is all thanks to our advanced technologies. One of its most important features is a smart segment blocking mechanism. Project members see all segments in their entirety, but can only work on the ones assigned by a manager. When an editor starts their work, the segment is blocked to the translator, who can no longer make any changes themselves. However, they are free to leave comments to the segment or chat directly with their project colleagues if they have any questions.

Direct communication between team members is the basis of any fast, quality translation. All the currently existing translation models fall short of this level of collaborative work.
