Smartcat Release 63 “Philippines”

The recent improvements include great new features, better user experience and more supported languages.

Smartcat Release 63 “Philippines”

Paying freelancers is now a piece of cake

Smartcat is so much more than just a tool for managing translation projects and searching for freelancers. You can also manage and automate administrative tasks, and effortlessly pay any freelancers who work on your projects. The icing on the cake is that this also applies to freelancers who don’t even work with Smartcat.

Our new feature means that you can now add a job order for any contributor working on your project, including those who are not members of your Smartcat team and even those who are not yet registered in Smartcat. To do this, follow these simple steps:

  1. Create a new job on the Payments page.
  2. Enter the freelancer’s email address and fill in all the required fields. If the freelancer is already registered in Smartcat, they will be automatically added to your team. If they are not already registered in Smartcat, they will receive an email with a password to their new account and will also be added to your team.
  3. Once the task is completed, you can simply create a bill and pay it.

Approval mode

Besides translators, other specialists can also collaborate on Smartcat projects. Some translations need to be approved by an entire team of experts, including developers, UX designers, lawyers, etc. You can invite anyone to join Smartcat and participate in projects, and there is no limit on the number of users.

We have added a new mode to the editor called the “Approval mode”, which makes it easier for reviewers to contribute to the project.

In this mode, comments can be added in the right-hand section, just like you would in a Google Docs or MS Word document, while the CAT panel containing TM matches is positioned at the bottom allowing the reviewer to check translated segments against TM entries.

Finding and hiring translators has never been easier

Your feedback helps us improve the Smartcat experience. The recent changes we made involve a few tweaks to the Marketplace.

When searching for freelancers, you can now set a minimum and a maximum rate per word so you can narrow down the search results to only those freelancers who meet your price requirements.

In addition, the boxes that display freelancers on the Assignment page have been made larger and now contain photos. You can now quickly jump to the freelancer’s profile page by clicking on them.

Chat bubbles

Smartcat’s chat function is a great way to stay in touch with your team. Yet, as many of you reported, the red dot notification was easy to miss.

We’ve solved that problem. When you receive a new message, a bubble with a preview of the text will now pop up in the top right-hand corner of the screen.

YAML: Yet another supported format

We have added support for the YAML format in beta. If you want to start translating files in this format, drop us a line and we’ll enable it for your account.

New languages

More languages are coming! This time we added:

  • Chinese (Cantonese)
  • Chinese (Macau)
  • Chinese (Malaysia)
  • Chinese (Singapore)
  • Malay (Malaysia)
  • Malay (Singapore)
  • Samoan
  • Tongan
  • Azerbaijani (Cyrillic)

Work with Azerbaijani using Smartcat Integration API? We changed the language code for Azerbaijani in Latin script from “az” to “az-Latn”. If you work with this language using the API, please change the code in your configuration.

Note that you can get the full list of supported languages and language codes from the GET directory endpoint.

More API news

Last month, we introduced a new update to the API allowing you to list projects created by a specific user. This time, we have added two more options — you can now list projects based on project name or client.

We have also added new API methods that allow you to get a list of glossaries, and also allow you to enable or disable glossaries in your projects.

Bug fixes

And, on a final note, we have also fixed the following:

  • encoding issues in TXT files;
  • issues with search results for terms in glossaries containing dialects;
  • issues with loading comments from SDLXLIFF files.

That’s all for now but we never stop working to make Smartcat better for you. We always welcome your questions and ideas, so if you have any, don’t be shy, get in touch!
